Awareness is our true self; it’s what we are. So we don’t have to try to develop awareness; we simply need to notice how we block awareness with our thoughts, our fantasies, our opinions, and our judgments. We’re either in awareness, which is our natural state, or we’re doing something else. – Joko Beck

How simple. For decades,  I tried to acquire Awareness, when all the time I  have been this awareness, but became distracted  by the entertainment and fear of the mind.  My eyes would get misty with longing when I would read of the awakening of Eckhart Tolle,  Byron Katie, Papaji and various other sages, and the permanent freedom they experienced from the limitations of living inside the movie projector of the mind.

Moment by moment, I am learning to be more observant of myself and how I create my own limitations and freedom.  It doesn’t require deep thinking to get into observer mode so I may experience my true self –  words can get in the way, it requires a silent observation which leads one back to the holy foundation of Self.

I  found that when I resisted life – my intuition and clarity  became obscured and I made errors in judgment. I also seemed to attract more negativity into my space. But, when I learned new moves with the dance of life and had the understanding that there are certain things in life we cannot control, that the tapestry of life is infinite,  that the dual nature of life brings us joy and sorrow, dark and light – a quiet surrender took place and the light of clarity shined on the darker corners of my life.

Surrender does not mean giving up, not doing anything about what we wish to change; it means surrendering our internal conflict; from this place of stillness, we either take action in the outward world, or continue to look within and work on releasing internally that which is blocking us.

Embracing all of life and learning to flow with it,  has given me a  sweeter dance with life. May your dance also be sweet.

“Forgiveness is not a moral issue.
It is an energy dynamic…
Forgiveness means that you do not carry the baggage of an experience.
When you choose not to forgive,
the experience that you do not forgive sticks with you.
When you choose not to forgive,
it is like agreeing to wear dark, gruesome sunglasses that distort everything,
and it is you who are forced every day
to look at life through those contaminated lenses
because you have chosen to keep them.”

Gary Zukav from “The Seat Of The Soul”

Being true to oneself takes courage and is liberating. I was watching an Oprah show where she said that unless we are true to ourselves, we will never grow into the fullness of our being. How true. For years, I spent time in Corporate America working in a high-rise skyscraper which was beautiful at night when I would look out of the window, and see the lights of the surrounding buildings illuminating the sky, but my career was suppressing my soul; so, I left after 23 years into the unknown.  I finally set myself free to reclaim my soul.

I am sharing a few quotes that I found inspiring:

Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.–Carl Jung

I have had to risk losing popularity, risk losing people’s acceptance in order to do something that’s close to my heart and that I think is meaningful…At some point you have to divorce yourself from the things that other people want for you.–Jim Carrey

Any life, no matter how long and complex it may be, is made up of a single moment–the moment in which a man finds out, once and for all, who he is.–Jorge Luis Borges

Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive. —Howard Thurman

Knowing others is intelligence; knowing yourself is true wisdom.
Mastering others is strength; mastering yourself is true power.
If you realize that you have enough, you are truly rich. —Tao Te Ching

Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, they’re supposed to help you discover who you are. —Bernice Johnson Reagon

Use what talent you possess: The world would be very silent if no birds sang except those that sang best.–Henry Van Dyke

You are obligated to understand that you are unique in the world. There has never been anyone like you because, of there were, there would be no need for you to exist. You are an utterly new thing in creation. Your life goal is to realize this uniqueness.–Aaron Perlow (Itturay Torah)

My Four Agreements

Once in a while I like to stop and take a break from managing our business, cooking, doing household chores, answering emails, writing or whatever comes up at the moment, and reflect on where I am in my journey in life, not necessarily on the outside, but where I am in relationship to myself. Recently, I asked myself after remembering Don Miguel Ruiz’s four codes of living (Youtube presentation which I share at the end of this article), what is important to me? What guides me in my day-to-day living from the inside out? And this is what I came up with:

1. Integrity. Being true to myself and being truthful with others; once one has integrity as the foundation of one’s life, everything flows from that foundation.

2. Letting go of attachments, leads to having the ability to remain cool, calm and collected, or “C.C.C.”, as a co-worker tried to teach me over 20 years ago which were my volatile years, and I would often react without thinking first and fly off the handle. Problem was, I didn’t understand then, that in order to have a state of equanimity, I had to let go of attachments or expectations. It is our attachments, such as the attachment of being right in a petty argument, or wanting a loved one to behave in a certain way, or cling to what is no longer working for us, such as a dead-end or stressful job, is what causes suffering. My partner and I get along beautifully, but we are different: he is a nature loving man and I am a city girl; oh, how I love the city and its lights, diverse cultures, fine cuisine, while he loves the critters, the trees and his cabin in the woods. Yet neither one tries to change the other, and without this pressure on each other, we have merged both our worlds. The wonderful result is I have learned to be attuned to nature, to be inspired, without pressure or attachments from my mate, however, my mate does not do well in the city, so no pressure from me!

3. Going with the flow… there are goals and experiences in life we may have an influence on (or think we do), but in general I am starting to learn that trusting and stepping out-of-the-way allows for me to live from inspiration as opposed to handling my life only from the logical side of my brain, which often keeps one’s mind going in circles trying to figure out solutions that sometimes can keep one trapped. When I want to make a change or carry out a goal, I give it plenty of thought if it calls for it, but then I usually release it to the Source/God/Divine, whatever we may wish to call this Consciousness, and when the answer comes, I act on it, well most of the time. I am still a work in progress. Hey, no attachment, I am doing the best I can.

4. And above all, be Love… and harm no one. In a planet filled with humans with ego dramas running amok which Eckart Tolle often points out, there may be the human being who will cross our path and test us, but living in a world within that is a daily expression of love, for self and for life, pretty much balances out the challenges that may come now and then into our space. Every experience we have is an opportunity to ask ourselves, why it’s there. I am not a Gandhi or Mother Theresa, when someone crosses me, I still may get annoyed and may be direct, but the need to get even or put the person down is not there, so the memory or attachment pretty much fades away for me.

It’s simple...we each have our unique codes for living without having to pause and ponder, but once we take the time to introspect, it’s interesting to know what drives us in life, as it gives us a snapshot of our inner world, not to judge but to understand why we have the life we are experiencing and where we are now in understanding.

What are your agreements?

Awakening to Who We Really Are

I have been on a spiritual search for most of my life; always seeking answers to the questions “who am I?” “why am I here?”, “why do certain things happen in our world?” “Is this reality all there is?” This seeking is not new, it’s as old as the world itself, bringing forth many philosophers and teachers of spiritual truth, each with their own answers.

I have come to realize that acquiring more methods, ideas and practices can serve as a compass in a nobler direction, but it does not bring me closer to the clarity of being totally aware of my true nature. It is ironically in letting go of ideas, perceptions, a shedding of what no longer works, that creates openings which brings me closer to the reveleation of Truth.

The Truth is simple, it is within, but we cannot see it through the man- made stories and ego filters, which prevent us from seeing we are One and from the same Source.

In letting go, we set ourselves free.

“The Secret” and Inner Work

Books like “The Secret” which I enjoyed reading and watching the DVD, are motivating and fun to read, but I wonder, if we are totally honest, has visualizing, saying the affirmations, really worked in attracting what we want? Or does it remain a dream that it will work one day? I have the feeling that for most people using the Law of Attraction techniques to attract what they want has not worked as expected.

One area that many LOA books that I have read fail to discuss is, that if we don’t become aware of what is going on inside of us and release emotional blocks with clarity,  it presents a block in attracting what we want. If one feels unworthy of let’s say love,  stating “I am attracting a loving partner into my life” may not work the way it’s being envisioned  because what we feel on the inside, is our day-to-day affirmation of what WE think deserve, so most likely a mate that reflects a lack of self-love (as in an abusive relationship) may show up. This is where the LOA works, at the core of our being.

Joe Vitale one of the teachers in “The Secret” DVD, admits that as great as “The Secret” was, it didn’t dwell with depth with how our reality really works, but he still is appreciative that they were able to share several truths, as it’s useful in helping folks to focus on life differently (I am rephrasing here).  He has written a new book, “The Key” which fills the gaps with where “The Secret” left off.

Positive thinking is wonderful and powerful in serving as a compass to move our energy and life in the right direction, but inner work, releasing ideas about ourselves and Creation that blocks us, and combining this with a positive focus creates more profound changes.

To a positive, spirit filled of what is remaining of 2011!

Has repeating affirmations worked for you? Would love to hear from readers! 🙂

Why Always a Spiritual Focus?

I was recalling a comment that my late nephew Omar made when he was about 10. He took a look at the books I liked to read, and all were spiritual topics, well most of them; in the mix were psychology books and a few poetry collections. He said teasingly, “Aunt Marie, when are you going to read a normal book?” and it made me smile because he was right – I was not interested in novels or the general topics most people read.

My focus from the age of 14 years has been spiritual – it’s the only thing that truly matters to me, because out of a spiritual understanding arises a foundation that has sustained me in the journey we call life, and has given me a good grasp on how the human mind works and glimpses into the world of Spirit and Truth.

Through the ups and downs in my life, when shifts of awareness has occurred, and my concept of God has changed, the subtle awareness that I am timeless, living in a sacred world remains with me.

This encourages me to continue having the willingness for my consciousness to expand and to let go of what no longer works or allows me see the Face of God.
